If you are thinking about finishing your basement, then finishing basement walls is the first thing that should take place. The main reason why basement wall finishing needs to take place first is because of the most common issue that basements face. The main issue is moisture.
When moisture has the ability to build up in a basement, it can cause all kinds of problems like rotting, musty smells, and the build up of mold and mildew. A properly finished basement can become the most populated room in the house. However, problems caused by moisture can not only ruin investments you have made, but it can also be damaging to people and their health. To figure out if your basement is suffering from a moisture problem, take a sheet of plastic wrap and tape it on the wall. If moisture builds up on either side of it, there is a problem. After the moisture problem is taken care of, make sure that any wall leaks are plugged up as well. Once this is done, the rest of the basement wall finishing process can begin. You must remember to never cover up a wall that is wet. It is natural for the walls of a basement to feel warm during a humid day. If it gets wet after a long rain, then check out for moisture problems.
Basement Wall Finishing Process
Once all moisture problems have been taken care of, the process of finishing basement walls can begin. The most common way to finish basement walls is by building a conventional wall with furring strips and foam. This is done by following these steps:
- The first thing that you need to do is roll on the sealer that you have selected. This is to waterproof the walls. Roll on sealer is not exactly a permanent fix, so professional basement waterproofing is always the best option.
- After that is completed, now you can install some blocking between the joists and the top of the wall to back the drywall.
- Once the joists have been put in place, you can install foam board with an adhesive on the walls to lock them in place.
- Using a chalk line, snap it four inches from the floor to use as a guide to install the bottom plate.
- You can now assemble the wall using 2×4 lumber. If you have a large basement, it will be faster and easier to put it together on the ground. Tip the wall up and secure it to the bottom plate and the top plate.
- Add the drywall backers and you can know place the drywall in position.
